For the last decade, JerseyCAN has been at the forefront of ensuring that every child in New Jersey has access to a high-quality education, regardless of their background or circumstances. In the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, we published the report “A Time to Act: A Framework to Accelerate Learning,” outlining practice-proven and pandemic-emerged strategies to accelerate learning in the state. Now, armed with student data on learning outcomes, we understand the urgent need to prioritize the Science of Reading for a transformative change. This report, Leveraging Literacy, delves into our commitment to enact comprehensive change, focusing on 3rd-grade reading mastery statewide, and identifies literacy-based strategies to pave the way for learning recovery. We assert that an overhaul of reading instruction in New Jersey is essential to recover lost learning and ensure lifelong success for our children. Join us as we lead a movement of reading evangelists to champion reading instruction and enact meaningful change in New Jersey’s education system. Together, we can make a difference for our children’s future.
